Landscaped Garden With River Views

Barnes Cottage is nestled at the base of the Bluestack Mountains, and the bottom of Barnesmore Gap. It’s surrounded by 21 acres of mature gardens and woodlands and is adjacent to just one other house (ours).

This traditional cottage dates back to the mid-ninteenth century but been lovingly renovated and extended.

The cottage has been tastefully finished and equipped with all the little extras and modern conveniences that make your stay very special.

Explore along the paths and bridges of the grounds and enjoy the vibrant colours around every corner – this property is a haven of tranquillity.

Inside Barnes Cottage

You’ll enter the cottage through the small front porch and in to the fireside seating that has a small television with local channels and FreeSAT. To the left is a door with a second living area with a large blue sectional and flat screen TV with Netflix for a cozy movie night.

Also on the first level…

  • Galley Kitchen with gas cookers/oven, microwave, dishwasher and small refrigerator/freezer unit. 
  • A dining area with seats for 6
  • A toilet and shower room
  • The master bedroom with king size bed, walk-in closet and ensuite with bath/shower

On the second level you’ll find the remaining king room and twin room with closet and desk spaces, shower and separate toilet.

The Barnesmore cottage was a lovely place to stay. Cozy fires, lots of garden and walking paths on the large property to enjoy, and a special added touch of homemade tea biscuits from Megan made for an excellent stay. The cottage is located very close to Biddy O’Barnes pub which has delicious pizza as well as a great pint of Guinness!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this adorable cottage. The location is superb if you like to be in the middle of the countryside. It's really easy to find and very handy for Donegal town. The cottage is so well equipped and Megan left thoughtful touches such as milk, cookies and bread. The beds were really comfortable. The only complaint I have is that I wish I'd been able to stay longer. Megan is readily available to answer any questions but otherwise you're left to enjoy the peaceful location.

There were four of us staying and we all had a wonderful time. Megan and Aaron are excellent hosts and we cannot say enough good things about the cottage, it is fab. The location is superb, nice and secluded but still close to the town so it’s perfect for a relaxing getaway. We used the cottage as a base and visited Donegal Town, Slieve League, Silver Strand and Rossnowlagh Beach. Megan and Aaron also run a pub that is only a couple of minutes walk from the cottage, we loved it there, full of character and great craic to be had. We will be back, thanks again for allowing us to stay in your wonderful cottage!!!!

Everything was perfect! Communication was Megan was always clear, easy and nice. She couldn't welcome us in person because we arrived much later than expected and so her husband checked us in and made sure we had everything sorted. Thank you! Megan also gave us some great tips to visit the area, strolls and hikes, I can only thank her, it was simply amazing! We stayed there with family and the place is just perfect for having cozy time, comfy living room with its fireplace, nice dining room, a nice patio for smokers or for tea time with the sound of the river as a background. The rooms are are larger than on picture and very clean, beds are very good quality, we slept like babies. The whole place is actually more spacious and pretty than it looks on photos, very well located to visit Donegal and the Biddys Pub just down the road is perfect for a beer or two, plus no need to drive 🙂 We highly recommend Megan's place. Thank you again

The best thing about Megan’s place is the setting. The surrounding walks along the old rail line, the different garden areas around the houses, and the surrounding Barnesmore Gap are all enchanting. The house itself is cosy and there is effective heating and hot water. Communication was excellent.

Beautiful house. Great location just out of Donegal town but feel like you’re in wilderness. Local pub within easy walk was great. Loved Biddie O’Barnes. Cool, short walk to waterfall on property. Quite an impressive waterfall. House was so cosy and cute. Love all the wood panelling

    Do you allow dogs? (Pet Policy Included)

    No one wants to leave a member of the family behind when heading off on holiday, which is why we are a pet friendly cottage, so now you don’t have to worry about leaving your dog in the kennels. Read More about our Pet Policy for Barnesmore Retreats:

    Pet Friendly Conditions
    We do allow pets and have a policy for owners stated in simple terms:

    • Only socially friendly pets welcome: to other humans and to other pets (we have a friendly ginger cat on the premises named ‘Chip’)
    • We do not allow dogs that are vicious; and/or that are excessive barkers (although we do understand that dogs bark from time to time.)
    • Please bring your own beds, bedding and toweling. Sofas and beds are strictly for human use only.
    • Owners are responsible for all pet mess, around the cottage and the grounds
      • We have small children on the property and dog feces can be hazardous
    • Pets should not be left by themselves under any circumstances. Inside or outside the houses
    • Please keep out of the bedrooms (where there are hardwood floors)
    • Owners are responsible for all damage caused by pets, either by teeth, claws, bad potty training or territorial markings.
    • Pets are not allowed to do any gardening, replanting or composting. =)
    • All hair left behind by pets is the sole responsibility of the pet owner, and should be dealt with before departure.

    We are happy to provide (on request);

    • We can provide a small pet bed
    • We can provide an emergency accessories (eg. Dog lead, nappy bags, bowls)
    • We can provide you with information on local veterinary & boarding kennel facilities.

    Please note and remember the following:

    • Remember do not leave pets unattended in the property.
    • The pet should be exercised regularly outdoors, and be in full control of the owner.
    • All pets to be kept on a lead when outdoors, within the boundaries of the property.

    Biddy’s O’Barnes (pub) also allow well-behaved pets in some areas when on a lead.
